What we’re reading
Consumers can reduce own and system emissions with voluntary hourly REC procurement
- A recent review analyses 8 studies on the impact of various REC purchase conditions on system emissions reductions. Key finding: voluntary hourly REC purchases reduce consumer and system-level emissions, as compared to annual electricity usage and emissions matching.
- Smart meters are key to hourly matching as they provide granular consumption data. FlexiDao’s white paper reviews and ranks countries and regions on data availability for hourly matching, highlighting good access in Western Europe, North America and China, but less so in other geographies.
- As consumers increasingly set scope 2 reduction targets, energy suppliers should begin to offer hourly insights and matching programs.
India is primed for hourly matching
- A new report from EnergyTag identifies areas where India is already primed for an hourly matching. Widely available granular electricity data on the supply and demand side will simplify and further encourage the development of 24/7CFE programs.
- The Indian power market has 15-minute settlement periods for intraday and day ahead contracts, meaning 15-minute data is available. The National Smart Grid Mission and the Smart Meter National Programme are working to ensure granular consumption data is as accessible as supply data. Over 3.5 million smart meters have already been installed in 6 states.
- Widely available granular electricity data from the supply and demand side simplifies and further encourages the development of 24/7 CFE programs.
