Climate Group launches 24/7 carbon-free electricity coalition and standards

At the New York Climate Week, Climate Group launched ‘24/7 Carbon-Free Electricity (CFE) Campaign’, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at accelerating the global shift to clean energy. This new campaign is organised by the team behind RE100 and brings together some of the world’s leading companies, including Google, Vodafone, and AstraZeneca, to commit to sourcing carbon-free electricity that is time- and location-matched to actual consumption.

What is the 24/7 Carbon-Free Electricity Campaign?

The 24/7 CFE Campaign establishes a new global framework to guide organisations in sourcing and utilising clean energy around the clock. The campaign's technical criteria offer clear guidance for businesses aiming to match their energy use to carbon-free sources in real time and from specific locations. This is a crucial step beyond traditional renewable energy procurement, which often lacks alignment with actual consumption patterns.

Granular Energy CEO Toby Ferenczi has been deeply involved in shaping these criteria as a member of the 24/7 CFE Campaign Taskforce. He helped define the new standard that any corporate buyer can use to ensure they are making credible claims about their clean energy consumption.

A global first: standardising 24/7 Carbon-Free Energy

For the first time, an international standard exists to ensure that sourcing clean energy in a time- and location-matched way can significantly speed up the transition to a carbon-free grid. This new approach encourages a more accurate reflection of the realities of energy generation and consumption, helping to balance supply and demand in a way that accelerates decarbonisation.

Granular Energy’s role in driving the future of clean energy

As pioneers of the 24/7 carbon-free energy concept, Granular Energy fully supports the new technical criteria and is proud to have contributed to their development. We’ve been working hard to make it easier for energy providers to adopt these new standards. Our tools are designed to help providers quickly and efficiently offer their customers clean energy that meets the RE100-aligned 24/7 CFE criteria.

With these new standards in place, we are excited to see how businesses around the world can take the lead in transforming the energy landscape.
