Granular Energy and VUE naturemade launch pilot project for enhanced transparency and sub-hourly matching in Switzerland

While Switzerland has just announced a move from annual to quarterly matching, VUE and Granular Energy have launched a pilot to explore (quarter-)hourly intervals matching, along with the associated certification requirements. This will ensure a continuous effort to push for more transparency in electricity production and consumption.

Granular Energy and the Association for Environmentally Sound Energy (VUE) have launched a pilot project to enhance transparency in Switzerland's renewable energy system by introducing hourly monitoring and certification of renewable energy. This initiative aligns with the revised Ordinance on Guarantees of Origin and Electricity Labeling (HKSV), which shortens the validity of Guarantees of Origin from 12 months to 3 months starting January 2027. Granular Energy's platform will support this transition by enabling hourly tracking of energy production and consumption, offering more precise data and creating market incentives to accelerate investments in clean energy technologies.

VUE and Granular Energy aim to establish a global precedent with this system by January 2026, building trust in renewable energy and supporting Switzerland’s move toward a fully renewable energy supply. The pilot project, set to commence in January 2025, will test a new certification framework that leverages near-real-time data to match energy consumption with renewable production. This system is expected to provide unprecedented transparency for energy stakeholders, ensure fair access to the certification process for qualified providers, and generate financial incentives for investments in energy storage and flexibility.

The partnership underscores the critical role of temporal data in decarbonizing Switzerland’s electricity supply. According to VUE's Managing Director, Pascal Steingruber, this approach not only ensures market transparency but also fosters the development of appropriate renewable energy infrastructure. The project invites energy providers, producers, and consumers to participate, focusing on customer convenience and data protection while driving the ecological transformation of Switzerland's energy landscape.
